First Round

a)   Johann Sebastian Bach
      one Prelude from the suites BWV 1010, BWV 1011 or BWV 1012

b)   George Enescu
      Concert Piece for viola and piano

The pieces of the first round are to be performed from memory.

Second Round

a)   One of the following pieces:

      Carl Stamitz
      Concerto for viola and orchestra op. 1 in D major
from this: 1st movement including cadenza , or 

      Franz Anton Hoffmeister
      Concerto for Viola and Orchestra D major
from this: 1st movement including cadenza

The piece a) is to be performed from memory.

b)   One of the following pieces:

      György Ligeti
      Sonata for viola solo
from this: two movements from movements 2 to 6,  or 

      György Kurtág
      Signs, Games and Messages for viola solo
from this: a selection to last not more than 6 to 10 minutes’ duration

c)   One of the following pieces:

      Max Reger
      Three Suites for viola solo op. 131 d
from this: one slow and one fast movement from one of the suites,   or   

      Adolf Busch
      Suite op. 16 a
from this: one slow and one fast movement

The piece c) is to be performed from memory.

 Third Round

a)   One of the following pieces:

      Johannes Brahms
      Sonata in F minor op. 120/1,  or

Sonata in E-flat major op. 120/2,  or

Sonata in G major op.78

b)   One of the following pieces:

      Paul Hindemith
      Sonata for viola and piano op. 11/4,    or

Sonata for viola and piano 1939 , or

Sonate for viola and piano op. 25/4

Final Round with Orchestra

      Béla Bartók
      Viola Concerto (Tibor Serly Version – at their own discretion, candidates are permitted to make changes
based on the autograph),  or

      Paul Hindemith
      Der Schwanendreher

The piece is to be performed from memory.

A total of eight pieces are to be performed.

All the compositions in this program can be obtained from the music trade. Performance material cannot be purchased from the office of the International Instrumental Competition.
