Opera North Orchestra Academycalling all outstanding young violas!  

Tuesday 28 August – Saturday 1 September 2018

Opera North invites outstanding young violists to apply for the Opera North Orchestra Academy: a brand-new summer residential course, providing a world-class orchestral training experience with the Orchestra of Opera North in an inspirational and supportive environment.

As an Academy musician you will benefit from:

  • Side-by-side rehearsals with the full Orchestra of Opera North
  • Sectional coaching with players from the Orchestra of Opera North designed to develop excellence in ensemble skills and orchestral performance
  • In-depth insight into working with a professional orchestra and an internationally renowned conductor
  • Additional opportunities to play and rehearse chamber music throughout the week


For outstanding young orchestral musicians age 14 – 19, Grade 7+ or equivalent

(Grade as a guide only, qualification not essential)

When & Where

Residential course runs from Tuesday 28 August – Saturday 1 September 2018. Leeds College of Music, Leeds.

Junior and Intermediate Arpeggione, April 2018

Junior Arpeggione (one day course)  13th April 2018, 9.30am – 4pm

For viola players aged 6 and over and violinists wishing to try the viola in London N3

(Grade 1-4) Cost £50.

The London concert is on Sat 14th April 2018, 3pm (1pm rehearsal). Venue tbc

Intermediate Arpeggione (residential). 8th -12th April 2018

For viola players aged 8-16 years and violinists wishing to try the viola

(Grade 4 and above) Cost £525.

RNCM Young Violas

For 2018 the RNCM Young Violas offers a further series of Sunday morning workshops led by Lucy Nolan, and featuring special guests. The aim is simple; Young Violas will provide a chance to learn about and celebrate all things viola!
Activities will vary but may include some or all of the following:
– viola ensemble
– improvisation workshops
– performances by professional and conservatoire violists
– interactive group workshops on various aspects of technique
– workshops on orchestral excerpts
– master classes on solo performance
Young Violas is open to all violists of school age, from beginner to post grade 8. Violinists wishing to try viola will also be warmly welcomed but we ask you to contact us in advance if you need help sourcing a viola to play on. All workshops are free of charge.

About Lucy:
Lucy is an enthusiastic and experienced viola tutor and currently teaches at Birmingham Conservatoire, the University of Manchester, Yorkshire Young Musicians at Leeds College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music Junior Department, the University of Leeds and Pro Corda. 
Aside from teaching and chamber music, Lucy is also busy as a freelance orchestral violist, performing with orchestras such as Manchester Camerata, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic.


Pro Corda is a registered charity and completely not-for-profit. The charity was established in 1969 and founded by Pamela Spofforth MBE and Elizabeth Hewlins MBE. Its purpose is ‘to provide for and conduct the education of young persons and others in the whole art, philosophy and theory of music, particularly chamber music’. Pro Corda is the largest music organisation of its kind and is recognised as the UK’s centre of excellence for ensemble training. The administrative base is at Leiston Abbey, but it also offers course around  the country.  All Pro Corda courses employ leading international artists and musicians at the forefront of their fields.

Conservatoire (18 yrs +) Viola.  February 2019

Pro Corda’s highly acclaimed course for students undertaking music study in further education. Participants receive coaching from world famous musicians and performance platforms in pursuit of furthering their music education careers.
